The Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA) has announced that registration for AdventureNEXT Latin America 2023, to be held in Bogotá from 25-27 June 2023, is now open.

The event’s theme, Tourism as a Tool for Peace, offers delegates the opportunity to discover the region’s highlights while seeking to understand Colombia’s complex history and culture – including the process the country has undergone in recent decades to recover from conflict.

Colombia is a mecca of diversity and home to an incredible wealth of natural resources and cultural heritage. The country is a microcosm of Latin America’s most emblematic landscapes: Andean peaks and páramo, rainforest in the Amazon basin, savannahs and wetlands, and white-sand beaches along the Caribbean. Impressively, the country has more birds than any other country, with around 1,900 species recorded, representing around 20% of the world’s avian biodiversity.

Beyond the landscape, Colombian gastronomy has begun to attract worldwide attention. From innovative chefs creating complete sensory experiences, to classic dishes like arepas and ajiaco, the country has officially become a gastronomic mecca. Coffee aficionados flock to the renowned producers of some of the world’s most coveted beans.

Known as the “land of a thousand rhythms” because of the 1025 folkloric rhythms recorded, Colombia is recognised by UNESCO for its rich musical traditions, including Cumbia, Vallenato, Champeta and Bambuco, to name but a few. Varying from region to region, the music is largely a blend of African rhythms, indigenous sounds and European influences. Heard and celebrated at the many carnivals and festivals that take place throughout the year in Colombia, the music is deeply embedded in the souls of the people who live there.

And the beating heart at the centre of it all – both geographically and metaphorically – is Colombia’s capital, Bogotá.

Designated as one of the cities of music by UNESCO, Bogotá has more than 70 museums, 100 art galleries and 132 historical monuments. With more than 5,000 urban parks and 560 kilometres of bicycle paths, it is also one of the greenest cities in Latin America and has been recognised as one of the “Tree Cities of the World”. In addition, Bogotá was one of ten destinations selected for the “Tourism of the Future” programme, an initiative of the Inter-American Development Bank that aims to contribute to the competitiveness and sustainability of the tourism sector in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Colombia’s commitment to social and economic sustainability is evident in the country’s tourism development. The Bogotá Tourism Board recently unveiled an initiative called Fondetur, which provides funding to small businesses, tour operators and tour guides to improve their access to information technology, working equipment, marketing and sales strategies – necessities that allow them to improve and innovate within the local travel industry. Using a community-driven model, tourism offers Colombian entrepreneurs a reliable economic path to connect to their cultural roots and develop unique travel experiences for international markets.
