The World Travel Awards 2024 have once again celebrated excellence in the tourism industry, highlighting the most outstanding destinations in South and Central America. The awards, based on votes from industry professionals and travellers around the world, recognise destinations that have stood out for their outstanding tourism offering.

 

The winners for South America

Chile: A Variety of Awards

Chile was particularly honoured this year, winning several prestigious awards. The country was named South America’s leading adventure tourism destination, attracting thrill-seekers with its varied landscapes and outdoor activities. Santiago, the capital, was recognised as the best urban destination in South America, while the Atacama Desert was crowned the region’s most romantic destination. In addition, Chile distinguished itself as a Leading green destination, underlining its commitment to sustainable tourism. The country was also hailed as the best destination for young travellers, offering authentic and enriching experiences.

 

Colombia: A Complete Destination

Colombia also shone at the World Travel Awards 2024. San Andrés was recognised as the best beach destination in South America, with its heavenly beaches and crystal-clear waters. Bogotá established itself as the leading destination for business travel, while Barranquilla was celebrated for its role as Best Festivals and Events Destination. Cartagena de Indias was named Best Honeymoon Destination, thanks to its colonial charm and picturesque landscapes. In addition, ProColombia was honoured as the Best Tourism Promotion Organisation, and Bogotá’s El Dorado International Airport was recognised for its operational excellence and awarded the prize for South America’s Leading Airport.

 

Brazil: The Cultural and Sports Lung

Brazil, with its rich culture and world-class infrastructure, received a number of notable awards. Rio de Janeiro was named both Best Urban Cultural Destination and Best  City Break Destination 2024.

São Paulo was recognised as the Leading Destination for Sports Tourism in South America, while Brazil as a whole was hailed as the Best Cruise Destination.

 

Peru: A Culinary and Cultural Star

Peru has been widely celebrated for its contributions to culture and gastronomy. The country was named South America’s leading culinary destination, confirming its reputation as a world leader in gastronomy. Peru has also been recognised as the Best Cultural Destination and the Best Leading Destination in South America. Machu Picchu, Peru’s historic jewel, was honoured as the region’s Best Tourist Attraction.

 

Other notable awards

Ecuador was recognised as Best Whale-Watching Destination, and Quito Turismo as Best City Tourism Office. Buenos Aires in Argentina was named Best Destination for Meetings and Conferences, while Paraguay was recognised as the leading nature destination.

 

The winners for the Central America and Mexico region

In Central America, Mexico and Belize dominated the awards. Acapulco’s General Juan N. Álvarez International Airport was named best airport in the region, while Tulum was recognised as the best beach destination. Mexico City was hailed as the leading destination for business travellers.

Cancún was honoured on several occasions, including as the best urban destination and the best destination for meetings and conferences. Belize was recognised as the best destination for adventure tourism and diving, highlighting its unique natural attractions, but also for its Tourism Board, which was rewarded as the leader for the Central America and Mexico region.

Costa Rica was not to be outdone, winning the region’s most coveted award as Best Destination 2024.
